ARTIST STATEMENT | Mae Hee Song is s a contemporary painter based in Surrey, British Columbia. Drawing from a rich educational background and international experience, she creates captivating abstract paintings in acrylic. Born in South Korea, she completed a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from Chung-ang University. Later, she relocated to Germany, where she achieved a Master’s degree at Braunschweig University of Art.
Originating from a fusion of Korean heritage and German artistic immersion, Song’s process utilizes colour and intricate geometrical shapes along with her extensive educational foundation and global experiences to meticulously craft engaging artworks. The inception of her artistic journey unfolded within the vibrant galleries of Europe, where she embarked on a transformative exploration of mediums, techniques, and themes. These formative periods of growth acted as the catalyst for a burgeoning career.
After spending 7 years in Germany, she returned to Korea, redefining her artistic practices by deconstructing earlier influences and distancing herself from the grip of expressionism. Throughout her 40-year career as a full-time artist, she had 16 solo exhibitions, gracing both Korean and German venues, and has been featured in over 100 group and invitation exhibitions across locations such as Australia, Indonesia, and China. Furthermore, she has participated as a juror in 4 art fairs hosted in Korea.
Presently, her artwork graces the collections of prestigious institutions, including the National Museum of Contemporary Art and Seoul Museum of Art in Korea, as well as the Landes Museum of Nidersachen in Germany.
