ARTIST STATEMENT | I have been a practicing artist for many years but have more lately thought about the artistic legacy of my own family and wanted to incorporate that in my work. In northern Europe before the changes of mid century modernity, painting was traditionally a male prerogative, and fibre arts belonged to the female culture. My mother was a master fibre artist who created textiles and rugs on her hand-built loom. I have created a series of paintings in which I could remain true to my own painting calling but also utilize many of the materials my mother worked with, and so combine both traditions. The result are textured canvases that sometimes move into the room in almost 3D fashion. The materials I work with are in themselves of interest. I like to use handmade paper of various kinds, either made by myself or sourced elsewhere from rich paper making cultures like Tibet and South East Asia. There is a long tradition in the East of mounting paintings done on fragile paper like rice paper onto more durable surfaces, and I follow that concept. I sometimes use gold leaf, which is a delicate process. Using different materials together provides variations in color and accent, but also texture.
