YACOS president, Gurmehak Bhourji, was the recipient of the Award for Arts & Culture Leadership at the SASSY Awards (Service Above Self Surrey Youth) on May 12 at the Surrey Arts Centre. The awards are presented by the Semiahmoo Rotary Club in partnership with the City of Surrey and Kwantlen Polytechnic University, with support from the White Rock Rotary Club and White Rock-Peninsula Rotary Club. The SASSYs aim to recognize, acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of youth aged 15 to 21, who are living in Surrey or White Rock and who exemplify the ideals of Rotary by making a positive impact in our community and around the world. Other categories for the SASSYs include, Community Service, Overcoming Adversity, International Service, Sports Leadership, Youth Leadership and Environmental Leadership. Each Award recipient receives a $1,000 bursary, as well as $500 to donate to a registered charity of their choice and a stylized SASSY Award trophy.
