ARTIST STATEMENT | I have been painting for over 50 years, but only have had the time to be serious when I retired about 13 years ago. I am mostly self-taught, although I took lessons many years ago when I lived in Halifax. I am also a regular at local one-day workshops around the Lower Mainland.

I find a lot of inspiration in nature, as well as in the images of indigenous communities of the West Coast. I am fascinated by the endless variety of colours found in nature. I’m a gardener as well, so I paint a lot of florals. I have experimented with both figurative and impressionist styles, but my comfort zone is realism.

I have shown at the Arts Council of Surrey 3 previous times, at the Plaskett Gallery in New Westminster, at local libraries in Surrey and New Westminster, and at the Langley Arts Council.  My work has been juried into shows at the Seymour Gallery, the Tsawassen Art Gallery, and in 8 shows at the Federation of Canadian Artists Gallery.

You can find a complete set of my work at my website, bobgunningart.com.

ARTIST STATEMENT | A Thousand Dreams is not a symbol of any physical location, but an emotional landscape shaped by memory, longing, and quiet resilience. It is a space I return to when the external world becomes overwhelming—a sanctuary constructed from fragments of lived experience and imagined light.

Working in watercolor, I embrace its fluidity and unpredictability to reflect the shifting nature of inner states. Within these compositions, anxiety softens into stillness, and melancholy transforms into a space for reflection. Fading blossoms, delicate animals, and subtle transitions of light function as symbolic elements, expressing fragility, endurance, and the quiet persistence of hope. These motifs are not illustrative but serve as visual metaphors for emotional complexity and introspection.

Each painting becomes a contemplative offering, inviting viewers to slow down and engage with their own inner landscapes. Me, A Thousand Dreams exists as both sanctuary and mirror—a shared, intimate space where vulnerability is not hidden but held with care. Through this body of work, I aim to create moments of pause, connection, and recognition, where personal emotion resonates beyond the individual and opens toward collective experience.
